Digital Solutions for Big Hydropower Plant Management: Technical training for Gilgel Gibe-II staff.
The Ethiopian Government has identified the optimization of the GILGEL GIBE-II hydropower plant, located in the Yem Special Woreda, in the Southern region of Ethiopia, as the most effective short-term support measures for the stabilization of the Ethiopian power supply. Through supply of some spare parts and introduction of an acoustic digital plant monitoring system an overall 185 MW capacity could be regained.
In the recent month of October 2023, GIZ-Energy Partnerships initiated a technical training, that is being provided by Voith Hydro (a German multinational technology company). This training is considered as one of the flagship interventions of GIZ-EP, which is contributing towards technical capacity building by providing hands-on training to the team of engineers that are employed by Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) at the GIBE-II Power Station.
The overall objective of this training is to capacitate GIBE-II technical team, to equip them with the knowledge and skills to implement fast, secure and sustainable operation measures and to work towards the enhancement of maintenance standards of the dam, This will as a result lead to the provision of stable electricity supply to the country.
